What a lake house collects while nobody is in it
A lake house has a different set of problems than a house in town. Sand and grit come in on every pair of feet and settle into the slider track and along the threshold, where they grind at the floor finish. Glass that faces the water takes spray, fingerprints and a haze that only shows when the afternoon sun swings round.
Between stays the place closes up. Damp towels and swimsuits sour in a bag, the fridge holds stale air, and a bedroom that has been shut for two weeks smells like it. None of that is a failure. It is what a seasonal house does, and it is the first thing an owner or a guest notices on walking in.
