The right schedule is the one where the house still feels fine on the day before the cleaner comes.

Weekly or Every Other Week: Choosing a Cleaning Rhythm

When people set up recurring cleaning, the first question is how often. Weekly feels indulgent and every other week feels sensible, and many households pick one by instinct and never revisit it. There is a better way to decide, and it starts with how your house actually behaves rather than how much you would like to spend or how tidy you hope to be.

Start with who and what lives in the house

Two adults who work out of the home and cook occasionally put a different load on a house than a family with three kids, two dogs and a mudroom. Pets matter most. Hair on floors and upholstery builds in days, not weeks, and no amount of vacuuming on a Saturday keeps it from returning by Wednesday. Young children add crumbs, sticky handprints and bathroom splashing. Guests, hobbies and home offices each shift the balance too.

Cooking habits count more than square footage. A household that cooks dinner at home five nights a week will have grease on the stovetop and crumbs under the toaster long before a household that orders in. The same goes for bathrooms: four people sharing one bathroom make a mess in a week that two people sharing two bathrooms take a month to make.

What actually piles up between visits

Think in terms of what you notice first when the cleaner has been gone for a few days. For most families it is the kitchen floor, the bathroom sink and the toilet, then dust on surfaces, then the floors in general. Those are the things that make a house feel dirty. Others, like baseboards, window sills and the inside of the microwave, build slowly and can wait for a longer cycle.

A useful split: weekly visits suit the parts that degrade fast, which are bathrooms, kitchens and floors. Every-other-week visits suit homes where those areas get light use or where you handle quick touch-ups yourself between visits. If you are wiping counters daily and running the vacuum midweek, every other week can hold up fine.

A simple test before you commit

Pick a day that falls just before a cleaning, and walk through your house like a guest. Is the kitchen floor sticky? Is the bathroom something you would hesitate to show a visitor? Is there a layer of dust you can write in? If your honest answer is that the house is fine at day fourteen, every other week suits you. If you are already apologizing for the house by day eight, you are paying for the schedule in stress, and weekly is likely the better fit.

You can also try one schedule for a couple of months and then change it. Recurring cleaning is not a contract with yourself. Many people start weekly, enjoy the reset, and move to every other week once the house is in good shape, because upkeep is easier than catching up. Others start every other week and add visits during busy seasons.

Questions worth asking yourself

  • How does the kitchen floor feel by the end of the week?
  • Do pets shed enough that hair shows up between visits?
  • How many people share each bathroom?
  • Do you have guests, or a home office that sees steady foot traffic?
  • Would you rather spend your weekend cleaning, or be done with it?
  • Are you cleaning between visits, or is the cleaner doing all of it?

When to change the rhythm

Life shifts and your schedule can follow. A new puppy, a baby, a houseguest for the month, a season of home projects with dust everywhere, or a stretch when you are away more than home are all good reasons to revisit the plan. In Wisconsin, winter keeps everyone indoors, and the mud and salt that come in on boots make floors work harder than in summer. Many households tighten the schedule for those months and loosen it when the weather turns.

It also helps to share feedback. A good cleaner wants to know whether the schedule is working, and tells you honestly what they see. A reviewer named Jaemie, who switched to Shelly's Home Services from another company, wrote in a Google review that the company “always does an incredible job and listens to our needs.” That listening is what lets a schedule adjust over time.
